Kirkland Nourishing Networks

Kirkland Nourishing Network is trying to fill some gaps in food security in our town.

School counselors and teachers identify the numbers of the most needy students while maintaining confidentiality. Families of these students receive donated food to help during school breaks when students are not receiving meal support at school or through weekend pantry packs.

Your help is much needed and will end up with wholesome food on the tables of families with elementary school children that would otherwise have very little over the December Holiday Break from school (December 19 – January 5).

If you'd like to read about the Thanksgiving Break program see the Kirkland Reporter news story.

Kirkland Walkability Map

Went to the Kirkland 2035 meeting last night. One of the things I saw there that I really liked was this walkability map of Kirkland. It clearly shows that Central Houghton is one of the more walkable neighborhoods in Kirkland. Factors affecting our walkability score: the Houghton Center with all the supporting retail, transit along 108th, the relative gentle grade of 108th, Lakeview Elementary, neighborhood parks, the International Community School, and of course all the people who get out and walk!

At an Open House to be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, Kirkland citizens can talk with city staff about proposed changes to the City’s Comprehensive Plan regarding land use, housing, transportation, public services, environmental protection and other essential policies.  Kirkland residents recently received a special edition of City Update, the city’s newsletter that features long-range plans which will guide the future growth of Kirkland. The Kirkland 2035 initiative, launched over 18 months ago, has involved members of the Kirkland community in idea sharing for how the City can best address the anticipated growth of housing and jobs, manage traffic, preserve parks and open spaces, and provide other vital services over the next 20 years.   Information will be available for public comment on the private property requests to change zoning and development regulations as well as proposed updates to several Neighborhood Plans.  Citizens can speak with Parks Department staff and Park Board members about the proposed Aquatic/Recreation/Community (ARC) Center and the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) Plan.  Tours of the City’s Transportation Management Center, where the City monitors traffic in real-time, will be available. The Open House will be held in the upper level of Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue from 5 to 7 p.m.  The Park Board and Kirkland Alliance of Neighborhoods will be holding their meetings at 7 p.m. following the Open House.

Extensive public feedback has been received throughout the Kirkland 2035 initiative and has shaped the draft policies and goals of the Comprehensive Plan, Neighborhood Plans, Transportation Master Plan, PROS Plan, Surface Water Management Plan, Cross Kirkland Corridor Master Plan, Urban Forestry Management Plan and the Juanita Drive Corridor Study.  The Open House is an opportunity for the City to hear what residents think about the draft updates to the Comprehensive Plan as the Planning Commission considers its recommendations to the City Council on changes.

For more about the Kirkland 2035 initiative and the various long-range plans, go to www.kirklandwa.gov/kirkland2035. If you are unable to attend the Open House, please share your ideas online at www.ideasforum.kirklandwa.gov.[10.30.14]

PictureHought-Down is funded by Kirkland Neighborhood Grants and many volunteer hours.
Each year the city of Kirkland provides funds to the individual neighborhood associations that can be used for community events, communications and operations, physical improvement projects, neighborhood identity projects, and/or leadership training and education.

Grant requests are due January 31, 2015 and the Central Houghton Neighborhood Association would like your ideas - time is short. Grant money must be matched by volunteer time. Email us at centralhougthon@gmail.com with suggestions or for more information, or bring your ideas to the neighborhood general meeting at 7:00pm on December 3 at Fire Station 22 in Houghton.

Houghton/Everest Neighborhood Center Update

11/2/2014

The Houghton/Everest Neighborhood Center Citizen Amendment Requests and the Houghton Community Council and Planning Commission recommendations were discussed at the Council’s Planning and Economic Development Committee (PED) meeting on Monday, September 8. The PED Committee members asked the City Manager to consider developing a defined amendment framework and community process that would include Everest and Central Houghton residents, property owners and the Houghton Community Council and result in final decisions that create certainty for all parties.

Picture
The Resolution is the City Manager’s proposed (and approved September 16 by City Council) framework to accomplish these goals. The City Manager’s framework Resolution varies somewhat from the HCC and Planning Commission recommendations by focusing on the Houghton/Everest Neighborhood Center issues, rather than a general update of the Everest Neighborhood Plan. The Resolution also prioritizes this effort for the City staff and Planning Commission immediately after the Comprehensive Plan update is concluded, and no later than January 15, 2016. The process is designed to be completed by the end of 2016. If approved, staff will further define the process in partnership with the HCC, neighborhoods and land owners.
