Minutes from April Meeting

In- Motion campaign – King County Metro Transit is partnering with local communities to encourage residents to use healthier travel options like the bus, carpooling, bicycling and walking. If you’d like to learn about the details of the In Motion campaign please see the Website http://www.metrokc.gov/kcdot/transit/inmotion/  In order for CHNA to begin this program in Houghton, we need to have some committed volunteers to get the program underway.  It takes a bit of set up, but once underway it pretty much runs itself.  If you are available for a few hours a week this summer and would like to help this worthwhile program, please contact Lisa McConnell at kirby994@verizon.net or 425-827-4642

BEST High School Senior Olga Rocheeva is hosting a school wide garage sale.  She needs your help in collecting items to sell during the event.  Funds collected during the event will go directly back into the school’s ASB to support events such as Field Day, art programs, guest speakers and the Prom.  Items will be collected April 9 – April 13 and April 16 – April 18 from 7:30am – 3:30pm at the BEST School Office. Please do not donate: undergarments, car seats, large appliances/furniture, or computers.  If you have any questions about donating please contact Olga Rocheeva at s-orocheeva@lwsd.org or Jamie Walton at jwalton@lwsd.org 425-828-3289 x 1581.  The actual garage sale will be open to the public on Saturday, April 28th 9am – 6pm at BEST High School.

Ivy Pull – Saturday April 14th at Watershed Park This is the first of the season and the first Ivy Pull at Watershed Park. Please see  http://www.ci.kirkland.wa.us/depart/parks/Green_Kirkland_/Green_Kirkland__Program_Information.htm#Volunteer%20Ivy%20Pulls for more info or contact Nicci Osborn at 425.587.3342 or nosborn@ci.kirkland.wa.us

Traffic update for 108 – We do have a new traffic committee and we are focusing our efforts for problems with 108th Avenue (of which there are many).  Ellen McMahon would like to include 108th in a grant proposal for flashing beacon signs for the school zone.  These school speed limit signs would flash during school hours when the speed limit in that zone is 20 MPH.   This is prefer to the somewhat ambiguous signs we have now, which state that the speed is 20 MPH When Children Are Present. If people don’t see children right there they tend to ignore the speed limit.  They also tend to not include the BEST teenagers in the speed limit restrictions.  In the meantime, if we all in Houghton obey the posted limits, then at least the 3 or 4 cars behind us will be included in safe travel in our neighborhood.  Let’s keep an eye out for each other.

Shed/CERT update – CHNA is trying to get our storage shed placed at Terrace Park.  The shed will hopefully be able to be used by our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as a place to store emergency supplies to help in the next emergency/disaster.  We are in discussion with City Parks Department and will let you know if this will be a go.

Fourth of July float – We agreed the idea for the Houghton Bell story would make a good float for this year’s Fourth of July parade.  And by float, we do mean float.  We plan on attempting to make this year’s float with balloons.  Look out Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, here comes Houghton.  If you would like to be a part of this, please contact any of the officers.

Carillon Woods update – Construction has begun!  The play area has been cleared and forms are down.  And some of the trails have been cleared and laid with wood chips.  Go check out our rapidly improving park.  Construction will continue until this summer.

Hope to see you on Wednesday!
